DeKalb FFA traveled to Columbia, Mo., for the State FFA Contest on April 19-20. Two teams made it to the state level. The groups that went were the Forestry team and Nursery and Landscaping team.
FFA Advisor Aaron Medsker was overjoyed by the outcome of state.
“I feel like the teams that had the chance to go to state were deserving of it,” Medsker said.
Sophomore Joseph Lofland was impressed by the way the Forestry team did.
“We improved a lot throughout the season; we had decent scores at districts,” Lofland said.
Senior Elizabeth Gunter was glad with how the Nursery and Landscaping team got to state.
“We started out behind at the start of the season, then we started focusing more as the season went on,” Gunter said.
Gunter and junior Jessica Janorschke received proficiency awards, with Gunter taking second at state. The proficiency awards were based on applications Gunter and Janorschke submitted over their SAE projects. Gunter’s award was in Food Service. Janorschke was in Crop Specialty.
FFA is not done quite just yet this school year. The annual plant sale is going on from now until all the plants are sold.
“We had an exceptional plant sale this year,” Medsker said. “We sold out of everything but vegetables within the first three days.”
