After two games, the DeKalb High School Scholar Bowl Team lost to Mound City during sectionals on Tuesday, April 24, 2018.
This was not the first time the two teams went head-to-head at sectionals. Just last year the Tigers played against the Panthers at sectionals, with the Panthers moving on to the state competition.
Scholar Bowl Coach Josh Wilson knew it was going to be a challenge.
“It felt good to return to sectionals, but we couldn’t finish and it just didn’t go well,” Wilson said.
The Tigers prepared for this game for a whole week hoping to throw off the Panthers’ game. Senior Cole Wildhagen knew what went wrong.
“We couldn’t get any of the math type questions right,” Wildhagen said. “In the last game we had a really good start then Mound City’s best guy started buzzing in.”
Even though the Tigers didn’t go to state, freshman Ariana Geoffroy had the opportunity to go to sectionals for the first time.
“It was really cool because I got to answer some of the questions that got us in the game,” Geoffroy said.
For seniors Cold Wildhagen and Elizabeth Gunter, this was their final meet with the scholar bowl team.
“It’s bittersweet, but I’m proud of the team and the way that we played,” Wildhagen said.
