Track is back and the DeKalb track team is running in high gear. Some of the first meets have already occurred, but the next one on the schedule is April 9 at Squaw Creek hosted by Mound City.
This year the track team has some new faces on it. There are 10 new competitors on the team.
“We have five freshmen girls and four freshmen boys that decided to join this year,” Head Coach McKenzie Reagan said.
Freshman Wyatt Taylor is competing for the first time this year for the high school team.
“I am competing in a lot of running events this year,” Taylor said. “I am running in the mile, 2-mile and 300-meter hurdles.”
This year the DeKalb track throwers are competing in a completely different event. Junior Kirstian Goddard and freshman Ashtyn Griffin are throwing the javelin this year.
“They started practicing when the state of Missouri made throwing javelin legal,” Reagan said.
Griffin thinks this is a really good opportunity to have this chance.
“It’s really nerve racking to learn this, but it is a good learning experience,” Griffin said.
Districts are on May 5 at West Platte High School and the Tigers hope to look further to sectionals and state.
